Plantar warts can turn every step into a reminder — pain, embarrassment, and limits on the activities you enjoy. Don’t let them control your life.
At Toronto Foot Clinic, we treat plantar warts quickly and effectively using proven methods tailored to your needs.
What are Plantar Warts?
Plantar warts are skin growths caused by certain strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Only some HPV types affect the soles of the feet. Because the sole has thick, weight-bearing skin, plantar warts (verrucae) are often painful and harder to treat. They spread easily between people and to other body areas, so quick treatment is important. SWIFT microwave therapy can treat warts from the elbows and hands down to the knees and feet.
What is Swift Wart Therapy?
Swift uses focused medical microwaves to treat warts. The device delivers energy to a set depth so only the wart is targeted, leaving the skin surface intact. The heat (about 42–45°C for short bursts) causes infected tissue to release proteins that trigger your immune system to fight the virus. Multiple treatments help your body develop immunity rather than just destroying the wart. Each pulse lasts about 2 seconds and is repeated 5-7 times, so you may feel brief discomfort. After treatment you usually walk out with no dressing and little or no pain.
How Does It Work?
During our procedure, our experience Chiropodists use a specialised SWFT device to deliver controlled microwave energy directly to the wart. The process involves:
Targeted Energy Delivery: The device emits microwave energy that precisely heats the wart tissue without affecting the surrounding healthy skin.
Cellular Disruption: The heat generated by the microwaves disrupts the wart’s cellular structure, leading to its destruction.
Immune System Activation: The treatment stimulates a localized immune response, encouraging your body to combat the human papillomavirus (HPV) responsible for causing warts, theraby reducing the likelihood of recurrence.

Swift uses microwaves, a form of non‑ionising radiation, which means they cannot damage the DNA of living tissue and affect only the infected wart tissue. The device operates at very low energy levels that primarily cause microscopic vibration of water molecules within skin cells, producing localized effects without penetrating deeper tissues.
-
Yes, Chiropodists are only allowed to use Swift on warts from the ankle to the toes.
-
The simple answer is No. All wart treatments cause some level of discomfort. If your pain tolerance is low, we do NOT recommend this treatment.
-
While some patients notice improvement after the first session, full resolution typically occurs withint a few months as the immune system works to clear the infection. Complete wart elimination often takes place after three to four treatments.

Swift Therapy is considered safe for children; however, we do not recommend this treatment at our clinics because the microwave-generated heat can be uncomfortable and difficult for children to tolerate. Young patients are often unable to cope with the level of pain or distress this procedure may cause.

HPV is often picked up in shared places like pools, showers and changing rooms. Wear sandals or flip-flops there to protect your feet. Don’t share foot items (nail clippers, razors, pumice stones, files). Replace worn slip-on shoes used without socks and clean/disinfect your bathroom and shower regularly.
